Black Weekend

Image found via CityPages.

Did you all survive Black Friday? I barely did. I did manage to get most of my gift shopping done. Woohoo! Now, allow me to regale you with a tale of a Black Friday of yore...

It was 2 or 3 in the morning. I don't remember exactly, I was so dazed. I was in line outside of a Wal-Mart waiting with several others to get a Tickle-Me Elmo or a Furby or some crap. (I was gonna be the cool aunt, dang it!) When the doors opened and employees let us in, it become clear no one was prepared for this. I saw a startled employee near the toy section see everyone coming and she cried out, "Oh God! Here they come!" She then made a run for it. Women trampled one another, gentle old ladies bit at anyone who came too close, and a pregnant lady very nearly lost the child she was carrying in the carnage. I threw myself in front of her to protect her and her protruding belly.

I swear, sometimes, people really are just like zombies.

Zombie Stitchery

Found via Average Jane Crafter.

We've all seen them. Vintage stitch designs featuring domestic goddesses happily frolicing in the kitchen. Why don't we zombify them. Average Jane Crafter did this beautifully. Imagine this design on a tea towel hanging innocently in front of your oven.

You could probably even stain it with red dye to make it look bloody. Now there's something you can pass down to the kids.

Pass the Brains, Please

Found via Flickr.

Mmm, who wouldn't choose a nice plate of brains over the traditionally too-dry turkey? Imagine visiting the folks this year and bringing over a bowl of bleached brains (steamed cauliflower) or a nice brain pie. Do you have any special zombie Thanksgiving plans?

Zombie Wear

Found via Retail of the Living Dead.

Every zombie lover needs a little something to show whose side they're really on. (Psst! They're rooting for the zombies!) Thankfully, there are plenty of zombie shirts out there for you to traipse around in.

Found via ThinkGeek.

These shirts are just a couple of our favorites. There's also this really awesome tie. What about you? Do you have some zombie wear you're particularly proud of? Send us your pictures in the comments or email us at reenaroberts@ymail.com.

Zombie Cupcakes

Zombies. Cupcakes. Zombie Cupcakes. Best idea ever?

Found via The Sweetest Kitchen.

I'm thinking yes. These babies are chocolate-pumpkin flavored and filled with pumpkin buttercream. Delicious!

Zombie Nesting Dolls

Found via Kotaku.

In honor of Left 4 Dead 2's release, here are some Left 4 Dead zombie nesting dolls. They're modeled after the Tanks, Boomers, Smokers, Hunters, and zombie Left 4 Dead fans respectively.

Can you imagine making these things? That's a labor of love right there. Not to mention the artist is incredibly talented. Imagine a Left 4 Dead fan receiving this. They would cry with joy, I tell you what.

By the way, have any of you played Left 4 Dead 2 yet? How is it?

Tortured flesh bangle. Courtesy of Zombie Head's Etsy page.

We love our crafty zombie fans! Zombie Head is no exception. She creates fantastic jewelry inspired by our undead friends.

Above is one of our favorite pieces, a tortured flesh bangle. Go check out her shop and take a peek. Any of her pieces would be excellent gifts for zombie fans everywhere!

Attention Zombie Bloggers!

We'd love your help! We're looking for anyone willing to write for this blog. You can post any interesting zombie things you find.

Right now, we're specifically looking for someone to write a Left 4 Dead 2 review for us. None of us has the time/money to get it. :(

Poll of the Week

This week's poll is a good starter one. We want to know whose side you're on! Choose between humans, zombies, halfers, or cockroaches (they'll survive anything).

You have until next Sunday to decide. Choose wisely!

Movie Review: Night of the Living Dead

"They're coming to get you, Barbra..."

"Night of the Living Dead" is considered a pioneer in the field of zombie film. While George A. Romero didn't invent the zombie, he certainly made it into an art and created a brand of zombies that would be forever patched into pop culture.

Being notoriously low-budget, "Night of the Living Dead" utilizes unknown actors to tell the story of Ben and Barbra, two people attempting to survive the reanimation of the dead. They encounter other survivors in their efforts and become more and more surrounded by the ghouls.

The film has been criticized for having the female lead be largely catatonic and useless throughout, but her reaction is simply one of many. In the event of a "zombie apocalypse," there will be those like Barbra, who feel defeated and helpless, and those who are like Ben, who fiercely fights for his lives and those of others.

The ending is bittersweet; we see humans beginning to triumph, but what of our heroes? Romero handled the story well and the ending leaves us thinking. On the whole, "Night of the Living Dead" is an excellent movie and deserves to be considered innovative in its own right.

"Night of the Living Dead" is available for online viewing and rental via Netflix.
